Vanuatu: A Strategic Nation at the Crossroads of the Pacific

The Vanuatu, formerly known as the New Hebrides, is a sovereign island nation located at the heart of the South Pacific. Though modest in population and composed of numerous islands, Vanuatu holds a position of exceptional strategic, geopolitical, and economic importance—a fact too often underestimated in today’s global landscape.

Historically, Vanuatu played a critical role during the Pacific theater of the Second World War, hosting one of the most significant allied military bases in the region. The infrastructure and geographic advantages that once made Vanuatu indispensable have never disappeared; they remain latent assets awaiting renewed vision, partnership, and investment.

As a proud member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Vanuatu is anchored in democratic values, the rule of law, and international cooperation. Its location offers direct maritime and aerial access between Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, making it a natural hub for logistics, security cooperation, sustainable development, and regional diplomacy in the South Pacific.

Today, like many small island states, Vanuatu faces the challenge of economic and strategic dependency, particularly in relation to larger powers such as Australia and China. These realities underscore the importance of diversifying partnerships and reaffirming Vanuatu’s voice and agency on the international stage.

In my capacity as Ambassador and Special Envoy of Vanuatu to the Russian Federation and Special Envoy to the State of Israel, I am committed to advancing a clear objective: to ensure that Vanuatu reclaims its rightful place as a nation that matters—strategically, diplomatically, and economically.
